Learn mahjong

Start with the basic rules. Then choose MCR or Riichi and practice with exercises and apps.

Start here: 5 steps

  1. The tiles. There are three numbered suits from 1 to 9, the winds and the dragons. MCR also uses 8 flowers. MCR has 144 tiles. Riichi has 136.
  2. The goal. Build a hand of 14 tiles. The hand has four sets and one pair.
  3. The sets. A chow is three consecutive numbers of the same suit. A pung is three identical tiles. A kong is four identical tiles.
  4. The turn. You draw a tile. Then you discard a tile. You can also take another player's discard if it completes a set.
  5. Winning and scoring. You win when you complete the hand. The points depend on the variant.

Duplicate format

The Duplicate format reduces the effect of luck. The tables play the same deals. The result of each player is compared with the results of the others. It works like duplicate bridge.

The Mahjong International League (MIL) promotes this format to make mahjong a competitive mind sport. Read more about the MIL in Mahjong as a mind sport.
